Alliance Technologies' Enterprise Architecture Group Announces Launch of 'Green' Technology Initiative

Cutting-edge virtualization technology implemented for Merit Resources saves energy, minimizes waste capacity

Des Moines, IA – (June 2, 2008) – Alliance Technologies, a Des Moines-based full-service information technology solutions firm, announced today that its Enterprise Architecture Group is now specializing in virtualization storage and application delivery solutions in an effort to help companies reduce energy consumption, improve disaster recovery, and reduce investments in underused IT equipment. Alliance is working closely with Merit Resources, a locally-based professional employer organization providing human resources, benefits management, payroll services, and risk management services, on significant new IT projects that incorporate virtualization to reduce power and cooling needs within their data center.

Virtualization serves to maximize resources and minimize waste capacity by creating a flexible pool of servers and storage. Alliance’s work with Merit Resources takes advantage of a virtual server environment, converting 16 physical servers into virtual ones running on four energy-efficient servers. Additionally, Merit is taking advantage of thin provisioning and boot-from-SAN capabilities in its storage environment to gain further reductions in cooling requirements and energy consumption. A computer room air conditioning system has also been installed in the server row to maximize sensible cooling and increase efficiency.

“Working with Alliance Technologies, we have adopted a ‘virtual first’ strategy which enables us to fulfill new server requests using virtual machines. In other words, we don’t have to buy and maintain a new piece of hardware every time we need more capacity”, states Jeff Caracci, vice president of information technology at Merit Resources. “Through this virtualization strategy we are able to reduce capital expenditures, and decrease energy and cooling costs within our data center.”

“Remaining on the forefront of technologies that can cut costs and help the environment is something we’re passionate about at Alliance Technologies. It’s exciting to see the impact that virtualized solutions can have with medium-sized firms; no longer is this something only large enterprises with massive data centers can benefit from, said Mike Lang, president and CEO of Alliance Technologies. “Alliance Technologies aims to be the leader throughout Iowa for expanding and deploying solutions that incorporate green IT initiatives.”
